Glass vase refresh: Artisan look for less!

I can't tell you how many vases I have dropped off at Goodwill just because I thought "I don't need anymore of these." I am so inspired by these super expensive artisan vases (see below) I've seen online but lets be honest I'm not paying that, so I figured this thing out. I found these two very simple methods for totally transforming old glass vases into show stopping shelf decor.

INSPO

Here's what you'll need:

Black Vases:

Black Spray Paint (Doesn't have to be this one. Just make sure it has a strong adhesion.)

Dirt ( I'm not linking dirt ha! If you don't have a bag of dry dirt dig some up.)

White Vases:

White paint (this can be left over paint from any project.)

Cinnamon (Yes you read that right Cinnamon from the kitchen)

I used craft paint to add extra color. Here are some of my favorite colors.

Linen, Barnwood and Ash

SaltWash This is what adds the texture to otherwise flat vases. (I've seen some people use flour as well, but this Saltwash is amazing).

PREP WORK

If you aren't using a paint with a strong adhesion its not a bad idea to scuff the vase up with some sandpaper. These are meant to look rough so either way its fine.

Black Vases

STEP 1:

Spray the vases with the black spray paint.

STEP 2:

Once the vase is almost completely dry, add some dirt. This will scratch the paint and add texture.

STEP 3:

Continue these two steps until desired look is achieved.

STEP 4:

You could spray a clear matte spray paint over the finished look. My vases aren't touched often so I skipped this step. But you may want to add it if you are doing a lamp or other frequently used item.

White Vases

STEP 1:

Mix the Saltwash and white paint as directed on the packaging.

STEP 2:

Paint the vase with the Saltwash/Paint mixture. (it should be the consistency of cake batter.)

*Do I need to note that even though it looks like cake batter DON'T eat it. ; )

STEP 3:

Once the mixture is dry sprinkle some cinnamon and rub it into the vase. This will give it a dirty old look.

STEP 4:

Add a little bit of water to the craft paint to make it less drastic and lightly paint it on the vase. You can do this with multiple colors until desired look is achieved.

There you have it! Two simple methods for updating your old glass vases.
